The Whale

Darren AronofskyFilm2022United States

A reclusive, severely obese online writing teacher, eating himself to death in grief, spends a week trying to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter.

Most of 'The Whale' simply isn't as good as Brendan Fraser's performance.
Owen Gleiberman, Variety, 2022

Set almost entirely within one apartment over a single week, the film adapts a stage play by Samuel D. Hunter, who wrote the screenplay. Charlie teaches college writing online with his camera switched off, and his days are shaped by the few people who still come through his door: Liz, a nurse and friend who tracks his failing heart, and Thomas, a young missionary. The camera stays close and the frame boxy.

Critical response was sharply divided. Several tier one critics held that Fraser gives the performance of his career, finding warmth and precision beneath heavy prosthetic makeup, while others judged the production maudlin, its staging airless and its treatment of Charlie's body closer to spectacle than empathy. Reviewers who admired the acting often distrusted the script around it.

For the psychodynamic clinician, the film offers a concentrated study of grief turned inward: a man punishing his body after loss, holding on to guilt as a form of loyalty, and reaching for reparation with the daughter he left. It stages the longing to be received as good and the shame that forecloses care from others.

Darren Aronofsky is an American film director, born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1969. He is known for psychologically intense films including Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, Black Swan, and The Whale. His work returns repeatedly to characters gripped by compulsion: addiction that narrows a life, the body pushed past its limits, and the punishing drive toward perfection. For a clinically minded viewer, his films offer close portraits of people whose private obsessions reshape how they see themselves and others.
