Garden State

Andrew Largeman, a young television actor living in Los Angeles on long standing prescriptions, drives back to the New Jersey town he left as a teenager. He drifts among old schoolfriends, odd local jobs and his childhood house, and falls in with Sam, an open, quick talking woman who draws him out of his guard.

Critics received it as a distinctive first feature from a writer and director with a sharp eye for small, exact detail. Roger Ebert admired its intelligence and willingness to break convention, while noting that the story meanders and takes puzzling detours. Others praised the deadpan humour and the supporting performances, and some found Sam too neatly idealised and the mood closer to a curated mixtape than a built world.

For a clinician it is a study of medicated flatness and the slow return of feeling once the dose is set aside. The homecoming places the son back with the father who is also his prescriber, so grief, authority and dependence gather in one figure, while a new attachment carries the weight of older loss and the mourning arrives only as the numbing lifts.
