Fanny and Alexander
After their father dies and their mother remarries a severe bishop, two children in early-1900s Sweden endure a cold new household and retreat into imagination.
Cannes 1983 selection (four Academy Awards)
In a Swedish town at the turn of the twentieth century, Fanny and Alexander grow up in a large, warm theatrical family. When their father dies and their mother marries a rigid, punishing bishop, the children are moved into an austere household where fantasy becomes their refuge.
Seen largely from a child's vantage, the film shows mourning a dead father and enduring a frightening stepfather, with imagination pressed into service as a defence against grief. Selected at Cannes in 1983 and winner of four Academy Awards.
