A gay Taiwanese man in New York stages a marriage of convenience to satisfy his traditional parents, who then arrive to throw an elaborate wedding banquet.
Berlin Golden Bear 1993 won
Wai-Tung is a gay Taiwanese man living happily in New York with his partner Simon. To placate his traditional parents and help a tenant gain a green card, he agrees to a sham marriage with Wei-Wei. When his parents arrive to host a lavish wedding banquet, the arrangement strains under everyone's competing needs.
The film stages the collision of desire, concealment and the demands of the family, showing how loyalty, love and cultural expectation press against one another. It gives a therapist a warm and precise study of the closet, filial duty and the cost of living a divided life. It won the Golden Bear at Berlin in 1993.
