Pain and Glory
An ageing film director in physical and creative decline revisits his childhood, his first desires, his mother and his past loves as he confronts his own mortality.
Cannes Best Actor 2019 won
Salvador Mallo is a celebrated Spanish film director slowed by chronic pain and creative paralysis. As he drifts through memory and reconnects with figures from his past, the film moves between his present decline and vivid recollections of childhood poverty, his mother, his early longings and a lost love.
The film examines a life almost as if in analysis, returning to origins, first desire and addiction to make sense of who the man has become. It offers a therapist a model of how remembering and reworking the past can loosen a present that has seized up. It won Best Actor at Cannes in 2019.
