Poor Things
A woman revived by a scientist with the brain of an infant sets off across the world, discovering sex, freedom and her own mind as she rapidly matures.
Venice Golden Lion 2023 won
Bella Baxter is a young woman brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist who has implanted the brain of an infant in her body. Beginning with the impulses of a child, she runs off on a picaresque journey across Europe, encountering sex, cruelty, philosophy and money as she grows at astonishing speed.
The film is a fable of psychic development, following raw drives, emerging sexuality and self-invention as a person assembles a self from experience. It gives a therapist a stylised but pointed picture of maturation, appetite and the making of autonomy. It won the Golden Lion at Venice in 2023, and is adapted from the novel Poor Things by Alasdair Gray.
