A gifted Australian pianist, crushed by a domineering father, suffers a breakdown and years later rebuilds his life and his playing with the help of those around him.

Academy Award Best Actor 1997 won (Geoffrey Rush)

David Helfgott is a prodigiously talented Australian pianist raised under a controlling and volatile father who both drives and forbids his ambition. The strain of preparing a punishing concerto contributes to a mental breakdown, and after years lost to institutions David slowly returns to music and to life.

The film sets the terror of the paternal demand against psychiatric collapse and a fragile, moving recovery, showing how a parent's love and tyranny can become inseparable. It gives a therapist a portrait of talent, breakdown and the long road back. It won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1997 for Geoffrey Rush.
