Girl, Interrupted

James MangoldFilm1999United States

After a suspected overdose, a young woman is admitted to a 1960s psychiatric hospital, where she is diagnosed as borderline and drawn to a charismatic fellow patient.

Academy Award Best Supporting Actress 2000 won (Angelina Jolie)

In the late 1960s, eighteen-year-old Susanna is admitted to a psychiatric hospital after what may have been a suicide attempt and receives a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. On the ward she forms an intense bond with Lisa, a magnetic and defiant longtime patient, while questioning what her diagnosis and the institution really mean.

The film turns on the meaning of sanity, the weight of a label and the seductive pull of a charismatic peer within a closed setting. It offers a therapist material on diagnosis, institutional life and the dynamics between patients. It won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2000 for Angelina Jolie, and is adapted from the memoir Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen.
