Past Lives

Nora and Hae Sung grow up close in Seoul, children who assume they have all the time in the world. Her family emigrates and the two lose contact. Twelve years later they reconnect online, talk for months, then let the thread drop. Another decade on, Hae Sung visits New York, where Nora is a writer married to Arthur, and the three sit with what never became.

Critics received Song's first feature as a work of restraint that trusts silence and small gesture over declaration. Reviewers noted its refusal of the love-triangle formula: the camera holds on faces and lets longing register without a score pushing the feeling. Several marked the closing stretch, two people at a curb waiting for a car, as among the most affecting screen moments of its year.
