The Farewell
A Chinese American woman returns home for a staged wedding that is really a pretext for the family to gather and say goodbye to her dying grandmother, who is not told.
Sundance 2019 premiere
Billi, a Chinese American woman, learns that her beloved grandmother in China has terminal cancer and that the family has chosen not to tell her. Under the cover of a hastily arranged wedding, relatives gather from abroad to spend time with the matriarch while keeping the diagnosis secret.
The film examines a family's decision to carry the knowledge of death on the dying person's behalf, and the anticipatory grief that must be held in silence and disguised as celebration. Premiered at Sundance in 2019.
