The Room Next Door

Adapted from Sigrid Nunez's novel What Are You Going Through, the film follows Ingrid, a novelist, who reconnects with Martha, a former colleague now in late-stage cancer. Martha has obtained a means to end her life and asks Ingrid to occupy the adjoining room of a rented house when the time comes. Ingrid agrees, and the two spend their remaining days in conversation and quiet unease.

Critics noted the contrast between a grave subject and Almodovar's saturated style: bold interiors, painterly light, a composed surface that holds strong feeling at a slight remove. Several found the English dialogue more mannered than his Spanish work, while praising both performances for carrying the film's argument about autonomy without lecturing.

For a psychodynamic clinician, the film sits with the wish to die on one's own terms and the demand that wish places on another person. It shows what is asked of the friend who agrees to be present: to witness without rescuing, to stay close while holding a boundary, to bear the anxiety of a death she cannot prevent. Mortality here is met through friendship rather than family.
