The Room Next Door

Ingrid, a novelist, reconnects with Martha, a former war correspondent now facing terminal cancer. Martha asks Ingrid to be nearby in a rented house when she chooses to end her life, and the two women spend her final days in conversation, memory and quiet company.

The film considers how mortality can be met by the steady presence of another person, and how being with someone at the end is itself a form of care. Awarded the Golden Lion at Venice in 2024, and adapted from the novel What Are You Going Through by Sigrid Nunez.
