Gabbard's Textbook of Psychotherapeutic Treatments
An edited survey of the major psychotherapies used across psychiatric practice.
Edited by Glen O. Gabbard, this textbook gathers more than fifty contributors to document the psychotherapies practised across psychiatry within a single reference. It devotes separate sections to individual psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, and supportive psychotherapy, then turns to group, family, and couples work and to the integration of different treatment models.
Chapters follow a shared template, moving from theoretical foundations to technique, to application in specific disorders, and to the combination of psychotherapy with medication. The organisation lets a clinician compare how each approach conceptualises change and structures a course of treatment, while chapters on neurobiological underpinnings, efficacy research, and professional boundaries address the questions that cut across every modality.
American Psychiatric Publishing issued the volume in 2008. Its consistent format and cross referencing suit both trainees building a foundation and experienced clinicians consulting outside their primary orientation.
