Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders

Glen Owens GabbardFirst published 1989English

A large edited reference surveying evidence-based treatments across psychiatric disorders.

at the forefront of reference guides for clinicians interested in evidence-based approaches
Kristin Gill, Lori Bennett-Penn and Carol A. Bernstein, The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, 2015

Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders is an edited clinical reference that organises its material by disorder rather than by therapy, then works through the treatment options for each condition. The fifth edition, published in 2014, was restructured to follow DSM-5 categories, with seventy-three chapters grouped into twelve parts running from neurodevelopmental and psychotic disorders through mood, anxiety, trauma, substance use, neurocognitive, and personality disorders.

Within each chapter the contributors weigh the range of modalities a clinician might use: pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and adjunctive or combined approaches, alongside emerging treatments and questions of sequencing. The emphasis falls on treatment rather than diagnosis, and on what to do when the evidence base is thin as well as where controlled trials give firm direction.

For a practising clinician it functions as a bench reference: a place to check current options for a given presentation, compare their support, and locate the primary literature through heavily referenced chapters, tables, and figures.
