The Believer
Danny, a young New York Jew, becomes a violent neo-Nazi skinhead, tormented by the faith and identity he is trying to destroy.
Sundance Grand Jury Prize 2001 won
Danny is a brilliant, argumentative young Jewish man in New York who reinvents himself as a neo-Nazi skinhead, spouting antisemitic ideology while flashes of his religious education keep breaking through. His hatred turns steadily back on himself as the two halves of his identity collide.
The film is a striking case of self-hatred and identification with the aggressor, in which an unbearable part of the self is attacked in others to keep it from being felt within. It won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2001.
