Silver Linings Playbook

David O. RussellFilm2012United States

Released from a psychiatric hospital, Pat schemes to win back his wife and meets Tiffany, a grieving widow, and the two strike a bargain that draws them together.

Academy Award Best Actress 2013 won (Jennifer Lawrence)

Pat returns to his parents' home from a psychiatric hospital, set on reuniting with the wife whose betrayal precipitated his breakdown. He meets Tiffany, a young widow managing her own losses, and the two make a deal, her help in exchange for his partnership in a dance competition, which becomes a frame in which both begin to steady.

The film belongs here for its everyday portrait of living with bipolar disorder, grief and obsession, and for the way a shared structure and a wager can function almost as a therapeutic holding. It won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2013 for Jennifer Lawrence and is based on the novel The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick.
