Antichrist

Lars von TrierFilm2009Denmark

After their toddler dies while they have sex, a therapist takes his grief-stricken wife to a woods cabin to treat her, where mourning turns into terror and violence.

Cannes Best Actress 2009 won

A couple lose their small child, who falls from a window while they are making love, and the husband, a therapist, decides to treat his wife's overwhelming grief himself by taking her to their isolated cabin in the woods. The retreat meant to heal her becomes the setting for dread, guilt and escalating violence.

For clinical readers the film is a stark image of mourning that curdles into terror and self-destruction, and of the hazard of a clinician treating his own wife inside a relationship he cannot hold apart from the work. It won Best Actress at Cannes in 2009.
