Room
A young woman held captive for years raises her five-year-old son in a single locked room, then must help him meet the vast outside world once they escape.
Golden Globe Best Actress 2016 won (Brie Larson)
A woman abducted as a teenager has been held for seven years in a garden shed, where she has borne and raised her son Jack, now five, teaching him that their single room is the whole world. Their escape is only the midpoint, as both mother and child must then face a wider reality that overwhelms them in different ways.
The film explores captivity trauma, the intense primal bond between mother and child, and the shock of a world that will not fit what the child was taught. For a clinician it is a close study of attachment formed under extremity and the work of re-entry. Brie Larson won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in 2016, and the film is based on the novel Room by Emma Donoghue.
