Hereditary

Ari AsterFilm2018United States

After two devastating losses, a family already strained by inherited mental illness comes apart as the mother's grief turns toward something darker.

Sundance 2018 premiere

Following the death of her secretive mother, a miniature artist and her family suffer a second, shattering loss, and the household begins to fracture. As the mother tries to reach her dead through a grieving acquaintance, the film moves from domestic tragedy toward horror, with a legacy of madness surfacing across the generations.

Beneath the supernatural frame the film is about grief and inherited trauma, mourning that curdles into psychosis and is passed down a family line that cannot see it happening. It offers a therapist a heightened image of what is transmitted between generations. It premiered at Sundance in 2018.
