Nomadland
After losing her husband and her company town, a woman in her sixties sells up and lives out of a van, taking seasonal work across the American West.
Venice Golden Lion 2020 won
Fern, a woman in her sixties, loses her husband and then the Nevada town built around the plant where they worked. She converts a van into a home and joins a community of older itinerant workers, taking seasonal jobs and moving across the American West through the seasons.
Grief and the refusal of a settled life become a way of living rather than a phase to pass through, and memory of the dead is carried on the road rather than laid to rest. Awarded the Golden Lion at Venice in 2020, and adapted from the book Nomadland by Jessica Bruder.
