Marriage Story

Noah BaumbachFilm2019United States

A theatre director and an actress love each other but come apart, and their bicoastal divorce turns increasingly adversarial as lawyers reshape the split.

Academy Awards, Best Supporting Actress win plus Picture, Original Screenplay, Actor and Actress nominations, 2020

Marriage Story follows Charlie, a New York stage director, and Nicole, an actress moving back to Los Angeles, as their marriage ends. What begins as an attempt at an amicable, mediated separation hardens once lawyers enter, and the custody fight over their young son pulls the pair into positions neither wanted. The film watches each of them, in turn, argue, grieve, and change under the pressure.

It is a close observation of mourning a living relationship and of the identities that are lost and remade when a shared life ends. The film attends to projection, blame, and the tenderness that survives even bitter conflict. It won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and was nominated for Best Picture, Original Screenplay, Best Actor, and Best Actress in 2020.
