Ghostlight

Kelly O'Sullivan and Alex ThompsonFilm2024United States

A grieving construction worker unexpectedly joins a community theatre staging of Romeo and Juliet, and the role opens the family loss he has been unable to face.

Sundance Film Festival, NEXT section, 2024

Ghostlight follows Dan, a middle-aged construction worker whose family is quietly coming apart in the wake of a death. On impulse he is pulled into a community production of Romeo and Juliet, and the rehearsal room draws out feelings he cannot address at home. As the play's tragedy meets his own, the source of the family's grief, a son's suicide, comes into view.

The film shows theatre working as a container for mourning that cannot be spoken directly, letting a man approach his loss through a role at one remove from himself. It is a warm, grounded study of how enactment and shared performance can carry what plain conversation cannot. It premiered in the NEXT section of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
