Three grown sisters cope with their father leaving their fragile, controlling mother for a warmer new wife, as the family's polished order comes apart.

Academy Awards, five nominations including Director and Original Screenplay, 1979

Three adult sisters are thrown into crisis when their father leaves their exacting, emotionally frozen mother and remarries a livelier woman. The mother, an interior designer whose taste has ruled the household, unravels, and old rivalries and resentments among the daughters rise to the surface.

The film lays out maternal narcissism, mourning, and the buried wish for a suffocating mother's death, along with the way children absorb and repeat a parent's coldness. It offers a clinician a spare study of a family organised around one woman's fragility. It received five Academy Award nominations in 1979, including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.
