Drive My Car
A theatre director grieving his wife rehearses Uncle Vanya in Hiroshima with the young woman assigned to drive his car.
Ryusuke Hamaguchi's adaptation of a Haruki Murakami story follows Yusuke Kafuku, an actor and director staging a multilingual Uncle Vanya two years after his wife's death, and the quiet young woman assigned to drive him.
The long conversations in the car become something close to analytic work: two people circling losses they have never spoken, until the play and the driving open a way through. Academy Award for Best International Feature and Best Screenplay at Cannes. Adapted from the story in Men Without Women.
