Couples Therapy

Couples Therapy is a Showtime documentary series that films actual clients working with Dr. Orna Guralnik, a psychoanalyst and systemic couples therapist, across weekly sessions in a purpose-built consulting room in New York. Each half-hour episode follows several couples at once, cutting between their sessions as treatment unfolds over a season. The camera stays close to the room itself: its pauses, its ruptures, its slow repairs.

Critics received it as a rare case of reality television that treats its subjects with seriousness rather than spectacle, praising the restraint of the editing and its refusal to flatten people into types. Reviewers singled out Guralnik as a compelling presence on screen, and noted how much of the tension comes from watching a clinician think in real time.

For a practising clinician, the series is unusual in showing the analyst's own process: Guralnik's supervision with Virginia Goldner, her countertransference, her doubt about her reactions to a given couple. It offers a filmed record of relational technique in motion, of enactments named and worked with, and of the ethical weight of doing private work in front of an audience.
