Cinema Paradiso
A boy, a village projectionist and a lifetime of censored footage: Tornatore's love letter to cinema and to the man who stands in for an absent father.
Toto grows up in the projection box beside Alfredo, and the film follows what he keeps, what he leaves behind and what is cut out on someone else's instruction. It is sentimental in the way that mourning often is, and the famous final reel is a good demonstration of how much feeling can be carried by material that was removed rather than shown.
