The Hidden Spring

A Journey to the Source of Consciousness

Mark SolmsFirst published 2021English

Consciousness located in the brainstem and in affect. Solms' most ambitious argument.

The cortex becomes conscious only to the extent that it is aroused by the brainstem.
Mark Solms, p. 128

Mark Solms, a neuropsychologist and practising psychoanalyst, argues that consciousness begins not in the cortex but in the brainstem, and that its raw material is feeling rather than thought. Drawing on lesion studies, work with neurosurgical patients, and the free energy principle, he holds that affect is the primary form of awareness and that cortical cognition becomes conscious only when older, deeper structures rouse it.

For a psychodynamic reader the value lies in Solms' rehabilitation of Freud on empirical ground. He treats the drives as real biological quantities, reads affect as the register in which an organism tracks its own survival, and reconnects the analytic account of instinct and feeling to current neuroscience. Familiar clinical ideas, affect regulation, unconscious motivation, the bodily basis of emotion, acquire a physiological spine that a therapist can set beside what happens in the room.

First published in 2021, the book gathers decades of research into one sustained case, and states its more contested claims plainly.
