Bergin and Garfield's Handbook of Psychotherapy and Behavior Change
The reference work for outcome research, revised roughly every decade since 1971.
The handbook gathers what controlled trials, meta-analyses, and process studies have established about how psychotherapy works and when it helps. Chapters run from research methodology and outcome measurement through therapist effects, the therapeutic relationship, and results for specific presentations and populations, each written by researchers active in that area. The seventh edition, edited by Michael Barkham, Wolfgang Lutz, and Louis G. Castonguay, reorganises the material around measurement, mechanisms of change, and evidence for particular conditions.
For a psychodynamic clinician, the value sits in what the process chapters report about factors that hold across orientations. The evidence on the alliance, on repairing ruptures, on therapist variability, and on client feedback speaks directly to work built around the relationship, and it shows where data supports relational hypotheses and where it stays silent. The density is the tradeoff: this is a reference to consult by chapter, not a book to read straight through.

Wolfgang Lutz
Wolfgang Lutz is a psychotherapy researcher and professor of clinical psychology at the University of Trier, Germany, where he chairs the clinical psychology department and directs its research clinic. His work focuses on outcome monitoring, patient-focused feedback, and evidence-based personalisation of psychological treatment, including decision-support tools that help match patients to suitable approaches. He co-edited the seventh edition of Bergin and Garfield's Handbook of Psychotherapy and Behavior Change with Michael Barkham and Louis Castonguay.
Louis Georges Castonguay
Louis G. Castonguay is a clinical psychologist and Liberal Arts Professor of Psychology at Pennsylvania State University. His research addresses psychotherapy integration and the process and outcome of therapy, including the roles of clients, therapists, and the therapeutic relationship. He has helped build practice-research networks that bring clinicians and researchers together to study therapy in routine settings. He co-edited the seventh edition of Bergin and Garfield's Handbook of Psychotherapy and Behavior Change with Michael Barkham and Wolfgang Lutz.
