Learning from Experience

Wilfred Ruprecht BionFirst published 1962English

Containment, alpha function, and thinking as something that has to be developed rather than assumed.

To learn from experience alpha-function must operate on the awareness of the emotional experience; alpha-elements are produced from the impressions of the experience; these are thus made storeable and available for dream thoughts and for unconscious waking thinking.
W. R. Bion, Learning from Experience, chapter 4

Learning from Experience sets out Bion's account of how a mind becomes able to think. Published in 1962, it proposes an alpha function that works on raw sense impressions and emotion, the unprocessed beta elements, converting them into alpha elements that can be stored, dreamed, and used for thought. Where that function fails, experience cannot be digested and accumulates as material only for evacuation. Bion locates the origin of thinking in relationship: the infant projects unbearable states into a mother whose reverie receives and detoxifies them, the container holding the contained until it can be returned in tolerable form. From this he argues that thinking is not given but has to be developed, growing precisely because the mind must find some way to cope with thoughts and with the frustration they carry. For the clinician the book supplies a working vocabulary for what happens, or stalls, in the consulting room.

About the author

Wilfred Ruprecht Bion

1897 to 1979

Wilfred Ruprecht Bion (1897 to 1979) was a British psychoanalyst who commanded a tank in the First World War and later underwent analysis with Melanie Klein. At the Tavistock he pioneered the study of groups, describing basic assumption states of dependency, fight-flight, and pairing. His theory of thinking holds that alpha function transforms raw experience into thinkable material, and that a container receives and metabolises what is projected into it. His later work reaches towards O, the unknowable, and K, the link of knowing.
