Introducing Lacan: A Graphic Guide

Darian Leader, Judy GrovesFirst published 1995English

An illustrated primer introducing Jacques Lacan's ideas to newcomers.

Introducing Lacan sets out Jacques Lacan's central ideas in the illustrated format of Icon's Graphic Guides, with text by Darian Leader, a practising analyst, and drawings by Judy Groves. Across short, image-led spreads it follows Lacan from his early work on paranoia through his reading of structural linguistics into psychoanalysis and his account of the infant mirror phase, and traces how his thinking reached art, literature, philosophy and feminism.

For a clinician trained in another tradition, it works as a fast orientation to Lacan rather than a substitute for the seminars. Leader keeps the technical vocabulary (the imaginary, the symbolic, the real, the objet a) tied to concrete examples, so the reader can see what each term is doing before meeting it in denser secondary writing.

The book first appeared in 1995; this Graphic Guide edition was published by Icon Books in 2010 and runs to 176 pages.
