Three Colours: Blue
After her composer husband and young daughter die in a car crash, a woman tries to cut herself off from her past, only to be drawn slowly back toward life.
Venice Golden Lion 1993 won
Julie survives the car crash that kills her husband, a celebrated composer, and their young daughter. She sells the family home, destroys traces of the past and tries to live anonymously in Paris, refusing memory, attachment and the unfinished music her husband left behind.
Kieslowski traces the slow, involuntary labour of mourning, in which withdrawal and the wish to feel nothing give way to renewed ties and the completion of what was left undone. Awarded the Golden Lion at Venice in 1993.
