The Souvenir
A sheltered young film student in 1980s London falls into a consuming relationship with an older man who is secretly an addict.
Sundance Film Festival, Grand Jury Prize, World Cinema Dramatic, 2019
In early 1980s London, Julie, a sheltered and privileged young woman studying film, becomes involved with Anthony, an older and worldly man who conceals a heroin addiction. The relationship gradually takes over her life and her sense of herself, complicating her work and her ties to her family.
Drawn from the director's own life, the film renders desire, denial, and the retrospective work of memory, watching a person slowly recognise what she was inside of only in looking back. It is a study of how love and self deception can be hard to tell apart in the moment. It won the Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinema Dramatic competition at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019.
