The Skeleton Twins

Craig JohnsonFilm2014United States

Estranged twins Milo and Maggie reunite after both attempt suicide on the same day and try to repair a bond marked by their father's death.

Sundance Film Festival, Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, U.S. Dramatic, 2014

Milo and Maggie are estranged adult twins who are brought back into contact when, on the same day, each attempts suicide. Milo moves in with Maggie and her husband, and the siblings gradually confront the depression, secrets, and shared history, including their father's suicide, that have shaped both of their lives.

The film treats the sibling bond as both wound and lifeline, showing how a childhood loss and a family pattern of despair are carried differently by two people who began in the same place. It is honest about depression without resolving it neatly. It won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award in the U.S. Dramatic competition at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014.
