The Prince of Tides
Tom Wingo travels to New York to help his suicidal sister's psychiatrist, and in their sessions a brutal buried family trauma and his own defences come to the surface.
Academy Award Best Picture 1992 nominee
After his sister's suicide attempt, Tom Wingo travels from the American South to New York to give her psychiatrist the family history she cannot supply. In their sessions Tom begins to speak of the childhood the family had sealed away, and a violent event long kept from words comes into the open, changing him as much as it aids his sister.
The film sits in a therapist's library for its account of treatment reaching a trauma through an informant, and of the defences that have to loosen before it can be told. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1992 and is based on the novel The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy.
