The Lost Daughter
A professor's solitary seaside holiday is disturbed by a young mother and child, stirring buried memories of once walking out on her own daughters.
Academy Awards, Adapted Screenplay and two acting nominations, 2022
A middle aged academic on a working holiday by the sea becomes fixated on a young mother and her small daughter among the noisy family beside her. Their presence reopens memories of her own early motherhood and the period when she left her two young children to pursue her life and work.
The film surfaces maternal ambivalence and the return of the repressed, refusing to soften a woman's guilt over an abandonment she has never resolved. It gives a clinician an honest portrait of the parts of mothering that are rarely spoken. It received the Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay and two acting nominations in 2022, and is adapted from the novel The Lost Daughter by Elena Ferrante.
