Rachel Getting Married

Jonathan DemmeFilm2008United States

Kym leaves rehab to attend her sister Rachel's wedding, and her return reopens old wounds around a family tragedy she caused.

Academy Awards, Best Actress nomination, 2009

Kym is granted leave from a residential rehab programme to attend the wedding of her sister Rachel at the family home. Over a weekend of rehearsals, toasts, and music, her presence unsettles the household, and the buried history of a childhood accident that killed her younger brother pushes its way back into the open.

The film is a close study of the family scapegoat and of mourning that has never been worked through. It shows how guilt, addiction, and unspoken blame circulate between mother, father, and daughters, and how a celebration becomes the setting in which the disavowed returns. It received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in 2009.
