Pi
A reclusive mathematician convinced that a single number underlies all of nature is hunted by others for his discovery as his obsession destroys his mind.
Sundance Directing Award 1998 won
Max Cohen is a brilliant, isolated mathematician who believes a hidden numerical pattern governs the stock market and the natural world. Tormented by crippling headaches and pursued by a Wall Street firm and a group of religious mystics, he pushes his search past the limits of his sanity.
The film shows obsessional neurosis tipping into paranoid psychosis, as the drive for a hidden order consumes the man who seeks it. It offers a therapist a stark image of how the wish for total certainty can dismantle a mind. It won the Directing Award at Sundance in 1998.
