Pelle the Conqueror
A Swedish widower and his young son emigrate to Denmark for farm work, where the boy's love for his ageing, powerless father gives way to a longing to leave.
Cannes Palme d'Or 1988 won
An ageing Swedish widower, Lasse, emigrates to Denmark with his young son Pelle in hope of a better life, only to find them both bound as poorly treated labourers on a harsh farm. Pelle grows up amid cruelty and hardship while his father proves increasingly weak and unable to protect him.
The film follows a child's attachment to a failing father as it moves through disillusion toward the wish to separate and set out alone. Awarded the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1988, and adapted from the novel Pelle the Conqueror by Martin Andersen Nexo.
