Monsoon Wedding

Mira NairFilm2001India

As a Punjabi family gathers in Delhi for an arranged marriage, romances and tensions unfold and a hidden history of child abuse by a trusted uncle comes to light.

Venice Golden Lion 2001 won

Over the days before an arranged wedding, an extended Punjabi family assembles in Delhi amid rain, colour, flirtation and the strain of duty and money. Several threads of desire run through the preparations, and one of them exposes a long-concealed history of the sexual abuse of a child by a relative everyone had trusted.

The film belongs in a therapist's library for its portrait of family loyalty as both a container and a silencer, and of the moment when an adult protector chooses to name what has been kept hidden. It won the Golden Lion at Venice in 2001.
