Lust, Caution
In wartime Shanghai, a young woman posing as a seductress in a plot to assassinate a collaborator finds herself dangerously drawn to her target.
Venice Golden Lion 2007 won
In Japanese-occupied Shanghai, a young student joins a resistance cell and takes on the role of a married seductress to lure a powerful collaborator into an assassination plot. As the deception deepens, her feeling for the man she is meant to betray becomes real and dangerous.
The film shows desire and identification overwhelming a carefully maintained role, blurring the line between performance, self and a forbidden attachment. It offers a therapist a study of how a persona can be inhabited until it consumes the person beneath it. It won the Golden Lion at Venice in 2007, adapted from the novella Lust, Caution by Eileen Chang.
