A man adopted from India as a boy and raised in Australia sets out years later to find the mother and home he was separated from as a child.

As a small boy, Saroo is separated from his family on an Indian railway platform, travels far from home and is eventually adopted by a couple in Australia. As an adult, unsettled and pulled by fragments of memory, he begins a long search to trace his birth mother and the town he came from.
The film follows how the earliest attachments and a lost origin continue to shape identity and belonging across a whole life. It speaks directly to questions of adoption, mourning for a first family, and the pull of where one began. Dev Patel was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in 2017, and the film is based on A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley.
