Kramer vs. Kramer
When his wife leaves, a work-absorbed father learns to raise their young son alone, then faces her return and a bruising custody fight over the boy.
Golden Globe, Best Motion Picture Drama winner, 1980
A driven advertising man is left to raise his six year old son when his wife walks out. Forced into daily care, he slowly becomes a real father, only for his wife to return and sue for custody, pulling the child into a courtroom battle between two parents who both now want him.
The film is best read through the boy's experience of abandonment and divided loyalty, and through a father's late, hard won arrival at attachment. It gives a clinician a clear picture of how custody disputes land on the child rather than the adults. It won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Drama in 1980 and is adapted from the novel Kramer vs. Kramer by Avery Corman.
