Ida

Pawel PawlikowskiFilm2013Poland

In 1960s Poland, a young novice about to take her vows learns she is Jewish and sets out with her aunt to find how her family died in the war.

Golden Globe, Best Foreign Language Film nominee, 2015

Anna, an orphan raised in a convent, is told before her vows that her real name is Ida and that she is Jewish. She travels with her aunt, a hardened former state prosecutor, to uncover what happened to her parents, and the journey unsettles everything she thought she was.

The spare black and white film is a study of identity, mourning, and the return of the repressed, following a buried family history as it surfaces and forces a reckoning. It is a quiet resource on inherited trauma and the search for origins. It was a nominee for the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 2015.
