Frances

Frances Farmer is a gifted, headstrong actress whose independence and refusal to play the studio game bring her into conflict with Hollywood, her mother, and the authorities. A series of arrests and breakdowns leads to her committal, and over years she is subjected to institutional confinement, forced treatment, and, as the film presents it, a lobotomy that leaves her diminished.

The film treats mid century psychiatry as a machinery of control turned against a difficult woman, raising questions about diagnosis as punishment and about who is permitted to define sanity. It gives a clinician a stark case in the history of coercive treatment and the politics of the institution. It was nominated for the Academy Awards for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress in 1983.
