Flee
Amin, an Afghan refugee now settled in Denmark, tells for the first time the hidden story of his flight, recounted through animation to protect him.
Sundance Film Festival, Grand Jury Prize, World Cinema Documentary, 2021
On the verge of marriage and a settled life in Denmark, Amin agrees to tell a friend the full story he has kept secret for decades: his family's flight from Afghanistan, the years in hiding in Moscow, and the frightening, exploitative journey that finally brought him to safety. The account is animated to protect his identity, with the past pieced together from what he can bear to say.
The film is structured as the analytic act of putting the unspeakable into words, a first telling that loosens the hold of a hidden history over a life. For a therapist it is a study of concealment, disclosure, and the relief and risk of finally being heard. It won the Grand Jury Prize for World Cinema Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival in 2021.
