Christine
In 1974 Florida, television reporter Christine Chubbuck grows more isolated and depressed in the weeks leading to an on air act of self-destruction.
Sundance Film Festival, U.S. Dramatic Competition, 2016
Christine Chubbuck is an ambitious local television reporter frustrated by her station's turn toward sensational news, by unrequited feelings for a colleague, and by a private life marked by loneliness and health worries. Over her final weeks her efforts to be recognised falter, her isolation deepens, and her depression tightens toward the on air act for which the real case is remembered.
The film is a patient, close observation of suicidality building beneath a functioning surface, and of how thwarted ambition, isolation, and untreated depression can converge. For a clinician it is a careful depiction of the warning signs that are clear only in retrospect. It was selected for the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016.
