Brokeback Mountain
Two ranch hands begin a secret love affair one summer in Wyoming and carry it, unlived and unresolved, across twenty years of separate married lives.
Venice Golden Lion 2005 won
Two young ranch hands, Ennis and Jack, fall into a love affair one summer herding sheep on a Wyoming mountain. Over the next twenty years they marry, raise families and meet only in stolen intervals, unable to build the life their attachment asks for.
The film traces how repressed desire and shame harden into a lifelong mourning for a love that is never allowed to be lived. For a therapist it is a study of internalised prohibition and of grief without acknowledgement. It won the Golden Lion at Venice in 2005, based on the short story Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx.
