Blue Valentine

Derek CianfranceFilm2010United States

The film cuts between the hopeful beginning and the bitter end of a working-class marriage, following Dean and Cindy as their love forms and then falls apart.

Sundance 2010 Competition selection

Dean and Cindy are a young working-class couple whose marriage is unravelling. The film moves between two timelines, cutting the tender early days of their courtship against the exhausted final hours of the relationship, so that the beginning and end of their love unfold side by side.

By setting formation against collapse, the film traces idealisation, disillusion and the slow erosion of intimacy with unusual honesty, showing how the same two people can build and dismantle a bond. It offers a therapist a study of attachment and its wear over time. The film was selected for competition at Sundance in 2010.
