Blue Jasmine

Woody AllenFilm2013United States

Jasmine, a ruined New York socialite, moves in with her working-class sister in San Francisco and slides into delusion as her old life falls apart.

Academy Awards, Best Actress win plus two nominations, 2014

Jasmine arrives in San Francisco to stay with her sister Ginger after the collapse of her marriage to a fraudulent financier and the loss of her wealth. Clinging to the manners and self-image of her former life, she talks to herself, medicates with pills and vodka, and tries to reinvent herself, while flashbacks reveal her complicity in the ruin she cannot face.

The film is a portrait of denial and self-deception under the pressure of class shame and lost identity, tracing how a fragile self dissolves when the world that sustained it is gone. It offers a clinician a study of narcissistic collapse and the defensive rewriting of one's own history. It won the Academy Award for Best Actress and received two further nominations in 2014.
