Ana, mon amour
A couple's decade together is reconstructed out of order around her severe panic attacks and his role as caretaker, until it is unclear who is holding whom.
Berlin Film Festival, Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution, 2017
Toma and Ana meet as students and build a life together shadowed by her panic disorder and his constant care of her. Told in fragments that jump across years, the film pieces together their relationship partly through his sessions with an analyst.
The film asks who is really the patient in a couple organised around one person's illness, exposing how caretaking can conceal the caretaker's own need. It is a sharp study of dependence, projection, and the shifting roles within a relationship. It won the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution at the 2017 Berlin Film Festival, and is based on the novel Luminita, mon amour by Cezar Paul-Badescu.
