Amour

Michael HanekeFilm2012France

An elderly music teacher cares for his wife through a series of strokes, and a lifelong marriage meets its end at home.

Michael Haneke follows Georges and Anne, retired piano teachers in their eighties, from the first stroke that begins Anne's decline through to its end. The camera rarely leaves their apartment.

What the film holds open is the work of anticipatory mourning, the way tenderness, exhaustion and the wish for it to be over can occupy the same room. It is unsparing about the body and about what caregiving asks of the one who stays. Palme d'Or at Cannes and the Academy Award for Best International Feature.
